KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) - The state is chipping in $400,000 to help build a new winter home for the Sloop Clearwater in downtown Kingston.
The grant is part of a $67 million fund to benefit 61 projects in the Hudson Valley, announced in December by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The Clearwater organization and the Hudson River Maritime Museum will match the state grant, and Assemblyman Kevin Cahill has secured another $125,000 grant for the project. Allan Shope, president of the Clearwater board, is donating architectural services and $200,000 worth of timber.
The two-story, 4,500-square-foot building is to be put up in the fall on the museum's property. It will be used for educational programs and winter maintenance on the sloop.
The 106-foot-long sloop currently docks for the winter in Saugerties.
