SAUGERTIES, N.Y. -- Even though Christmas is less than two weeks away, it was looking more like Halloween in Saugerties this weekend.
The village hosted Ghouls' Yule, an event designed to get people in the holiday spirit in a nontraditional way. Many establishments stayed open late for the "walking dead" and even offering dinner and drink specials.
Organizers said that event was a great way to have fun, and also boost local businesses.
"Well I'm doing this tonight because I'm trying to build commerce, y'know people to come shop in Saugerties and spend time here, I mean you hear all kinds of things about Beacon and Hudson but not enough about Saugerties,” said Cruella Moxham, Ghouls' Yule organizer.
"Anything to get people out to the stores and yeah kind of play up that whole gothic side of Christmas, the whole Tim Burton flavor, Nightmare Before Christmas, even Sleepy Hollow things like that, Scrooge, y'know there have been versions of Christmas Carol over the years that have been very frightening so we figured why not mix Christmas and horror together,” said Brian Solomon, Ghouls' Yule organizer.
The spooky shopping spree featured a toy drive and a special reading of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol” plus raffles, giveaways, and a costume contest.
