New Windsor police warning of phone scam

ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. -- The police department in New Windsor are alerting residents about a recent phone scam.

Police say they've received reports from a number of residents who say they've received a call from an unknown person asking for money and personal information.

In one case, the caller claimed to be representing the lottery and told the caller he or she had won money. The caller asked the resident in order to receive the winnings, all they had to do was wire the tax amount.

According to the police department, they've also had reports of callers pretending to be part of credit agencies, utility companies or debt agencies.

Police are reminding residents to be careful and not to release information to anyone you do not know, and to not send money to anyone you can't properly identify.
