Hundreds of years ago these affable dogs were courageous and ferocious bull baiting dogs, but when dog fighting became illegal in England, bulldog lovers bred out the aggression and bred in a more playful easy going temperament.

Lorraine Eyth has been showing and breeding English bulldogs since the 1990s and tells us what she loves about the breed.

She said, "They have very funny personalities, each one of them is different. They are actually very intelligent, not necessarily cooperative all of them time, but very intelligent."

They are one of the most popular breeds in the US, and if you let them, an English bulldog would gladly be a lap dog. However they are a medium-sized dog weighing in at around 40 to 50 pounds and are very strong. Basic obedience training is a must with these stocky powerful dogs or they could end up walking you.

Bulldogs require minimal grooming and exercise. A daily walk suits them just fine, but during extremely warm days they should be kept cool because they can overheat quickly. And it’s important to keep the creases in their face clean and their eyes clear of debris. Eye and skin issues are common in the breed and pet parents of English bulldogs should be prepared to keep up with regular vet check-ups.
