The Spa Spot: Jockey Ortiz OK after gate incident
Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. was taken to Saratoga Hospital Friday afternoon after his right ankle was injured in a gate incident before the third race, but X-rays were negative.
Ortiz, 20, was cleared to ride on Saturday's card, including the Grade 1 $600,000 Alabama on Questing.
Ortiz was aboard Corinzia in the maiden claiming turf race for 3-year-old fillies. Corinzia acted up in the gate and Ortiz sustained the injury. He was put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital by ambulance to have his leg examined.
Corinzia was scratched and the horse to her inside, Race Palace, was also scratched. The Jonathan Sheppard-trained filly Stack the Storm resisted being loaded into the gate, but she relaxed when a blindfold was put over her eyes. Stack the Storm rallied in the stretch to win the race under jockey Rosie Napravnik.
Following the race, Stack the Storm was taken off the course on the horse ambulance. Reports immediately after the race said she was bleeding from wound on the leg - most likely suffered in the gate - that was not thought to be serious.
