MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- Dozens of beagles are being given a second chance as a local animal shelter is welcoming some of the dogs that had been left to die at a bankrupt medical testing lab in New Jersey.

There were a total of 120 beagles saved and 90 of them are headed to the Pets Alive in Middletown. We were there as seven of the dogs arrived via caravan to the shelter.

The executive director of the shelter says that these animals, ranging in ages two to five, have never seen the outdoors and have never enjoyed the company of other animals.

"I mean these are dogs that were bred for experimentation and then to be disposed of basically, and now they're gonna have great lives and forever homes and they're the sweetest dogs probably I've ever seen. So it's Beagle-mania, or whatever else you wanna say but the point is that there are lives here that have been saved and we're thrilled about it,” said Matt DeAngelis, Pets Alive Executive Co-Director.

The beagles now at Pets Alive will be available for adoption soon. Officials say 55 monkeys were also saved from the closed down lab.
