ALBANY, N.Y. -- It's a subject on which he's briefed the media for years. Now, Detective James Miller, by many counts the face of the Albany Police Department, arrested for driving while intoxicated.
"Detective James Miller was stopped for a vehicle and traffic violation. When he was stopped the officers conducted some field sobriety tests and determined he was operating under the influence of alcohol," said Steven Krokoff, Albany Chief of Police.
It all took place at the corner of North Pearl and Orange Streets Friday at roughly 9:30 p.m. Chief Krokoff says police noticed Miller driving a department-assigned vehicle without his headlights on. They stopped him, soon realizing Miller was intoxicated. He refused to take a breathalyzer test.
"He was subsequently arrested, brought down to south station for booking and after that he was suspended from our department," Chief Krokoff said.
Police charged Miller with DWI, refusal to submit to a chemical test, plus driving without headlights.
Miller's arrest comes just one week after the now internationally infamous kegs and eggs controversy. It's coincidence the chief says he doesn't take lightly."
"The DWI arrest that occurred last night was the result of a traffic stop by an Albany police officer and that Albany police officer demonstrated that we will not tolerate this type of illegal behavior from any of our own officers or the public," Chief Krokoff said.
A point further underscored by Ward 11 councilman Anton Konev.
"This just shows that nobody is above the law in our city and people will have consequences of their actions, whether they're college students or detectives of the Albany police department," Konev said.
Miller has been suspended without pay pending an investigation. He'll be arraigned on Monday.
