WARWICK, N.Y. -- "We don't see the power that children have to make change in the world," said retired Warwick Central School District teacher Beverly Braxton.
A high school graduate and a retired teacher chat outside the Sanfordville Elementary School on what they accomplished nearly a decade ago. The "Circle of Peace" 9/11 memorial is the product of one third grade class.
"I see how involved we were and how much individually I really took part in it, it's kind of amazing," said former student Jessica McClelland.
The memorial came after the teacher was faced with a subject matter for which there were no lesson plans.
"After President Bush declared war on terrorism, the children came in, some children were singing happily that we were going to war and some children were reacting and recoiling in fear about what that meant," said Braxton.
To help calm anxiety-ridden students, Beverly Braxton spearheaded the project promoting peace and tranquility. The children held car washes and other fundraisers to help pay for the tribute.
The Warwick Central School District will be using this site for its September 11th service. The ceremony will be Sunday night rain or shine. Musicians will fill the "Circle of Peace" offering a concert and their condolences to those killed in the attacks.
"I think it's important for people to see all the growth that have taken place since then and to still look back and remember it," said McClelland.
"There were a lot of people in this community that were impacted because we are so close to the city," said Braxton. "I hope that they can come here and leave their anxieties and fears or whatever doubts they have about their future here and be healed by it."
