MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- Two pit bulls who were rescued from a dog fighting ring in North Carolina have a new place to call home.
During court proceedings, the dogs were held for three years as evidence and were not allowed to have any interaction with people. A judge then ordered the dogs to be euthanized. That's when Pets Alive Animal Sanctuary in Middletown stepped in, along with a number of other supporters to fight for their lives.
On Tuesday, the dogs were handed over to the sanctuary.
The executive director said there is a misconception about the breed.
Pets Alive Executive Director Kerry Clair said, "These dogs have no life. They are bred for this, raised for this, trained for this, and we really feel this has got to stop in this country. Dogs like this are trained for this because they are so smart and because they are so affectionate. Pit bulls absolutely love their owners and they will do anything for them."
The dogs will live at the 80-acre sanctuary while awaiting adoption. Officials said they will receive training, daily exercise, and attention and care from staff and volunteers.
