LAFAYETTE, N.Y. -- Apple picking at Beak and Skiff Farm in LaFayette is underway during a milestone year.

"In 1911 my great-grandfather and George Skiff planted the first orchard here," said Beak & Skiff Retail Manager Candace Morse.

The two families are keeping it going. Fifth generation Beaks and Skiffs are now working on the farm.

"My cousin Richard and Peter Frickenstein, who is the fifth generation of the Skiff family. So it's really nice to have the fifth generation here and working hard," said Morse.

Much like the families who created the Beak and Skiff Farm, those here today are making apple picking a tradition.

"We've been coming out here since my children were younger and they're 25 and 21 now, so now I'm bringing my grandchildren," said Gina Tryon.

Petar Bojlevski and his wife have been coming here for a couple of years with their daughter Lydia and now it's little Jonathan's turn to pluck a few galas. It's not only building a tradition of family fun that the Bojlevski's, Beaks and Skiff want to encourage.

"So now we're trying to do a tradition with the family, come apple picking every year, enjoy some fresh apples and keep the business local," said Bojlevski.

"I urge everybody in Central New York to buy local," said Morse.

They're also hoping this generation learns the value of quality food grown close to home.

The apple picking season usually beings in late August and goes through October. Beak and Skiff Farm is open seven days a week, ten to five for apple picking.
