Night of fashion to help fight breast cancer

By: Elaina Athans

POUGHKEEPSIE -- "I didn't have the time or interest in being sick and I certainly had no intention of dying," said Miles of Hope Foundation co-founder and breast cancer survivor Dana Effron.

16 years after Dana Effron beat breast cancer, she's helping others in the fight for survival.

"Some people have no one but themselves," said Effron.

Effron co-founded Miles for Hope and the organization is getting some of help of its own this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A fashion show fundraiser will benefit the non-profit, which offers support services throughout the Hudson Valley.

"I had no idea how big this was, how many people were involved and we are thrilled and excited," said Effron.

"This is the first time we've ever done it," said Bella Luci Salon president Rebecca Lee.

Some business owners came up with the idea to put together a fashionably charitable night of fun.

"I've watched this foundation grow. I saw it start in 2003 and it's such a great cause I wanted to get involved," said Mary H. Abdoo and You owner Jeanne Biever.

The fundraiser will not only help Miles of Hope Foundation and breast cancer survivors, but also local businesses in the Poughkeepsie area.

"We wanted to really highlight that you can go right in your backyard and have great fashion and great beauty and we can come together and work together as a team," said Lee.

The Silhoutte of a Woman fashion show is October 27th. The Bardavon will be bustling that evening for the grand event with a grand purpose.

"We can't ever raise enough money, because there's always someone new who needs our help. Women who have to make a choice to take chemotherapy or pay for daycare," said Effron. "We're here to make sure those are not problems that they have to think about. They are problems we can help them with."
