JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. -- The Fulton County Sheriff's Department says Christopher Insogna, 19, was on his way to get some food with his sister and some friends, when the driver of car he was riding in made a fatal decision, crashing the vehicle at the intersection of Route 29 and Steele Avenue Extension in Johnstown.

Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey said, "Apparently [the driver] got going so fast that he was at the stop sign before he realized that he was not able to do anything about it."

The driver of the vehicle, Justin Vannostrand, 19, escaped with just minor bumps and bruises. But Christopher Insogna was pronounced dead at the scene, and his sister, Kelsey Insogna, 17, was ejected out the back window. She is in critical condition with severe head and spinal injuries.

"It's always, 'It can't happen to me,' but in this case, it did happen," Sheriff Lorey said. "It's very tragic."

Authorities believe Vannostrand was showing off the V8 engine in his 2000 Ford Mustang, passing friends driving in two other vehicles while crossing into the oncoming lane of the two-lane road, possibly hitting speeds of 100 miles per hour.

"Crossed Route 29, struck an earth embankment, struck a pickup truck, flipped over the pickup truck and became wedged nose-first between the pickup truck and the house," Sheriff Lorey said.

It's a joy ride that took at least one teen's life and critically injured another.

"Well if I had my way, I'd get every member of the high school class and bring them out here and let them see the car and let them see the consequences," Sheriff Lorey said.

The sheriff said alcohol was not a factor in this case, but they are compiling evidence and intend to present it to the district attorney for possible criminal charges.
