ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. -- A man who worked alongside New York's finest finds himself behind bars. Daniel Sayers, an NYPD auxiliary officer, arrested on child pornography charges. There were two raids and police say they found his massive photo collection of boys under the age of 16 engaging in sexual acts.
"Obviously, child pornography in and of itself is a terrible crime. Being a part of the auxiliary, you would hope that he would held to a higher standard," said New York State Police Captain Joseph Tripodo.
Sayers is an NYPD volunteer and according to the auxiliary’s website, he was a captain and received an award sponsored by President Barack Obama for his services.
Police say Sayers was a 20 year resident of Blooming Grove and was in the process of moving to a rental property in Greenwood Lake. Police add his landlord saw some of his moving boxes and notices disturbing photos and then contacted the authorities.
“I didn’t know the guy. Didn’t really know anything about. (He) didn’t really look like that kind of guy," said Greenwood Lake resident Tyler Phillips.
Phillips briefly met Sayers as he was moving in and was there as he was arrested.
"He didn’t seem surprised," said Phillips.
Sayers is being held at the Orange County Jail and has been suspended by the NYPD. Police don't know the identities of the children photographed, but they're hoping to learn who the nameless victims are as the investigation continues.
