HUDSON VALLEY -- School budgets that failed last month are up for a re-vote across New York State today.

Some budgets were shooting for a 60 percent super-majority after putting forward a plan that would raise their tax levy above the state cap.

Both Highland and New Paltz failed to reach the necessary 60 percent last month.

The Highland Central School District had called for a more than $36 million spending plan and a more than five percent tax levy increase.

It was a close call in New Paltz as 59 percent of voters approved plan, just missing the super-majority.

Officials say it's important to pass a budget this time around.

NYSSBA Communications Director David Albert said, "That would be very destructive in many school districts. We've already seen a lot of school districts, whether it's layoffs, there have been cuts to education, the extracurricular programs, sports programs, tutoring programs. So, a tax levy increase of zero percent, basically a flat tax levy would mean even more cuts so it does make sense for a district to go all out, put another vote up, and hopefully see what happens."
