MOHAWK VALLEY, N.Y. -- Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announce the New York State Canal Corporation will receive FEMA aid after last year's double hit from Tropical Storm Irene and the remnants of Lee. The senators said the Capital Region and the Mohawk Valley will be getting about $8.2 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for debris removal in the Erie Canal.

The two storms caused extensive and severe damage on the canal systems. Funding from FEMA is expected to cover about 75 percent of the removal costs.
