SULLIVAN COUNTY, N.Y. -- For the first time in more than a decade, South Fallsburg residents can enjoy a movie on the big screen, right in their back yard.

“I know a lot of people that are just so excited that movies are coming back to the Rivoli,” said Eileen Kalter.

The historic Rivoli Theater was built in 1923. It’s the only theater in town and one of only two in the entire county. The last time a movie was shown here was back in the late 90s.

“I think we will be a boon for the community because they won’t have to travel everywhere, they can come right to Sullivan County and see their own movies,” said Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop President Sally Gladden.

The theater is currently owned by the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop, which hosts daily productions there. Owners say theater productions will continue with the movie showings serving as an affordable entertainment option for children and families.

“Our motto is wait a little, save a lot, so it’s going to be movies coming out a few weeks after they’re already out in major theaters. Our tickets will be $7 any movie, anytime, so you‘re going to be saving a lot,” said Movie Committee Chairwoman Jackie Perito.

The theater will specialize in family and children’s movies. The first movie to be shown will “Madagascar 3” on Friday.
