West Point soldier killed in Afghanistan

AFGHANISTAN -- A West Point soldier based out of Fort Carson in Colorado has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense announced Thursday that Major Thomas Kennedy, 35, was killed by a suicide bomber on Wednesday.

Kennedy was assigned to Headquarters Company 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Governor Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Tuesday in Kennedy's honor.

West Point officials are planning an informal celebration of Kennedy's life on Saturday.

Calling hours are tentatively scheduled for next Thursday, with a funeral to follow on Friday with full honors.
