MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- Here's a story about a brave four-legged friend that will warm your heart.

Earlier this year, Robert was hit by a car, suffered a broken back and needed extensive surgery. Take a look at him now! After months of care from volunteers at Pets Alive in Middletown and the monetary help of many donors, Robert is actually up and running around.

That's not the only reason to celebrate, either. On Saturday, Pets Alive held a "farewell" party for their paraplegic pal, since he will now have a forever home.

Joseph Knipp, his new owner, says his new pet's challenges aren't a deterrent, but a blessing.

"He is a very special dog. Ask anybody here, they're all going to say that. Everybody loves Robert," Knipp said.

"Robert couldn't wag his tail when he first came here. He wags away now. He's happy. He couldn't move his back legs, he can now get up and stand on his own. The doctors hadn't given him any hope to get any mobility back, but he can actually stand now and take a few steps all on his own," said Kerry Clair, Pets Alive Executive Director.

There are still months of recovery ahead, but those who have seen him progress say Robert will have a very "normal" life for a paraplegic dog.
