Governor Andrew Cuomo visited the Hudson Valley region on Thursday. As YNN’s Alexandra Weishaupt reports, Cuomo started his morning at the Kingston Roundout and then took a boat ride to Poughkeepsie to see the progress of local projects.

HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. -- Ten regions in New York State are vying for funding to further develop the local economy and facilitate job growth and Thursday, it was the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development council’s chance to show off the area.

“We have one of the most beautiful regions on the planet here when we talk about the Hudson River valley, so how do we market this asset from a tourism point of view? How do governments work together?” asked Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo says it’s up to local leaders to collaborate and form a cohesive region in order to bring money in and future developmental projects to life.

“If you want to win, you will come together and come up with one plan and once vision and everybody pulls in one direction,” Cuomo said.

“We’re going to reshape government. We’re going to reshape our economy so we can thrive in a global economy and really compete,” said Ulster County Executive Mike Hein.

And as the governor cruised down the Hudson, he was able to see the re-shaping in the works, witnessing firsthand how last year’s state funds were invested in the Hudson Valley.

Cuomo said, “We want to make sure we’re aware we’re getting our bang for the buck and getting what we paid for last year.”

And regional development officials want to make sure more state funding continues to come this way. They were able to present future ideas to a review team while fostering this competitive drive that will ultimately determine which region gets the bigger slice of the financial grant pie

Cuomo said, “I’m excited about the potential here. It is working. It’s working all across the state. You feel the energy. People believe. Businesses are coming. All the arrows are pointed in the right direction.”

Cuomo ended his afternoon with a tour of the Walkway over the Hudson.

Regional developers are expected to know by November how much funding they’ll receive.
