SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The resounding message: The budget can be changed. With that, the Schenectady city council voted to override the mayor's veto of it, five to one.

Councilwoman Margaret King was the lone dissenter.

King said, “My concern is that we made too many cuts.”

That worry was echoed by other members.

“We have made cuts a little too deep,” one person said.

This stems from a memo released earlier in the day by the finance commissioner. It outlined the following:

“The impact on our Moody's rating, the impact on city staffing, the impact on city services. We haven't been able to get a good handle on what is the impact of the cuts we've made,” King said.

“There's lots of things that fluctuate,” said Councilman Carl Erikson.

Finance Committee Chair Carl Erikson says he plans to do some digging of his own.

Erikson said, “I sent some emails off today and will follow up with phone calls to make sure I fully understand the issues.”

In the meantime, it's clear the council sees the budget as a joint effort.

“Because the council is overriding this budget, it doesn't mean that we don't want to work with the mayor,” another said.

The mayor has not commented publicly about his veto. He finally broke his silence at the meeting, saying he will work with the council.
