KINGSTON, N.Y. -- The New York State high school football semifinals are coming to town. Five games will be held at Dietz Stadium this weekend.
“We are fortunate enough to continue to have our facility to be the one represented and to showcase for teams to utilize,” said Dietz Stadium Commission Chairman Kevin Gilfeather.
But with some major improvements at neighboring facilities, many wonder why Dietz year after year?
“We have the finest field in the area. There’s nobody that can compare to our field,” said Gilfeather.
Dietz is maintained by a board of commission with members from the city and the school district. The stadium has recently received updates to the turf, score board and sound system, but it does have its downfalls.
“It’s an older stadium. Does it have more fineries to it? Not really. We have the old locker room, restrooms. It's not real fancy,” said Athletic Director Glen Maisch.
Although funding is always an issue, plans are in the works to beef up the amenities to keep Dietz on the same playing field as competing stadiums.
“A new practice facility is necessary,” said Gilfeather. “We’re going to be looking at upgrading our press box area, as well as providing additional bathroom facilities on the visitor side of the stadium.”
In the hopes that the bid won’t be taken away from Kingston in future years.
“It's right off the Thruway. Easy access. We've got hotels in the area. We have some of the finest eateries in the area and with the renovations, I think it's the best place,” said Maisch.
