LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. — Saturday may not have felt like a day for swimming, but that didn't stop hundreds of people in Lake George.

About 550 people came out to Shepard's Park Beach for the 6th annual Polar Plunge. It's a benefit to raise money for the Special Olympics.

It's also a competition for many of the participants, who form teams and try to out-raise their competitors.

"It's an opportunity to raise money for our athletes. We never charge them to compete or train in 22 Olympic-style sports, so events like this help to provide training opportunities, to provide transportation, meals, anything that goes along with competition," said Michelle Iorizzo, Special Olympics New York.

"I was really really scared, I was very nervous, but today was a beautiful day and it's for a great cause, and everybody's energy really amped it up, so it was good," said Angela Tucker, Glens Falls.

Organizers raised about $80,000 from this year's event.
