POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Thanksgiving meals were given out to those in need in Dutchess County.

A Thanksgiving lunch was available at the Poughkeepsie Family Life Partnership Center Thursday afternoon. Volunteers dished out nearly one thousand meals to those in the community.

Hundreds of volunteers turned out to prepare and serve the food. Others delivered the lunch boxes to those who were unable to pick up their own.

Organizers and volunteers say they're happy to help.

"I'm thankful for god, letting me hang around. I'm thankful for so much every day. God let me hang around to see all this happen, all these volunteers, to see people care as much about it as I do," one person said.

"With homelessness, unemployment and under employment continuing to create a huge burden on individuals, there's really no better day to express the generosity of the community," said Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro.

The turkey meal was topped off with all the trimmings and pies for dessert.

We spoke with some local officials who were at the Family Life Partnership Center to help distribute the Thanksgiving meals.

Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik and Congresswoman Nan Hayworth were on hand. Both say they're thankful to be with the people and community they care about.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to do some good things for the people here in the Hudson Valley, people that I've gotten to know so well and I care very much about," said Hayworth.

"This is a time to give thanks and to be truly blessed for the many gifts and talents those in our community, who choose to give back to those in the community who need support the most," Tkazyik said.
