TROY, N.Y. -- Businesses and streets in the area of Congress and Third streets in downtown Troy are back open following a gas main break in the area.

It started around 10:30 a.m. during construction at the corner of Third and Congress streets. Troy officials said crews were attempting to remove a tree root when the gas main was compromised causing the break.

National Grid responded to the scene along with Troy police and fire.

Five buildings in the area were evacuated and sections of Congress Street and Third Street were closed for a few hours.

Crews continue to work in the area, but the businesses and roads have since been reopened.
