ALBANY, N.Y. -- Funeral services will be held Wednesday for the man who was killed while riding his bicycle last weekend.

Paul Merges Jr., 45, was killed early Saturday morning. It happened when officers said Pablo Cruz of Schenectady was speeding on Central Avenue in Colonie when a deputy saw him and began to pursue him.

Officers said Cruz kept driving into Albany where he hit Merges. He was thrown into the air and pinned to the ladder rack of Cruz's truck. Police said Cruz kept driving with Merges on top of his car until the engine died in Rotterdam where he was arrested.

Merges was an employee of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. The funeral will take place at McVeigh Funeral Home on North Allen Street in Albany.
