Pawling teacher’s son killed in Connecticut shooting
DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Among the 26 people killed inside Sandy Hook Elementary School, was a local teacher's son.
Jackie Barden, who is a second grade teacher at Pawling, lost her son, Daniel, in the shooting.
Pawling's Interim Superintendent, W. Michael Mahoney, released a statement on the school's website, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jackie and her family at this time and we know, too, that her thoughtful and dedicated efforts for her students would demand that we double our efforts in her absence to make sure that all students are well cared for, well educated, and safe. You have my pledge that each of our professionals will work diligently to promote a positive learning environment and a supportive emotional climate for our students."
The community of Pawling will come together Monday night to remember the victims of Friday's shooting massacre. The service will be held with a special person in mind. Former Pawling elementary school teacher and principle Jay Sherlach's daughter-in-law was killed in the shooting.
The memorial mass is taking place at the Church of St. John the Evangelist on East Main Street at 5 p.m.
