NEW YORK -- Riverkeeper is calling on New York State to improve water quality monitoring and address sewage problems.

The clean water advocacy group released a report on sewage contamination in the Hudson River Estuary.

According to the report, 24 percent of water samples taken from the New York Harbor between 2006-2011, failed the EPA's guidelines for safe swimming.

The numbers appear to get worse further up the river, where 60 percent of the samples taken north of the Troy lock had failing results.

Riverkeeper wants New York State to change the way they measure the Hudson's water quality.

Instead of averaging water quality, the group wants to implement an individual sample standard.
