NEWTOWN, Conn. -- People from around the country, moved by the deadly school shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school, are finding ways to console the town of Newtown, Connecticut during the holiday season.

Dozens of well-wishers showed up Christmas morning to hang ornaments on the town's memorial Christmas trees. Police officers from around Connecticut took extra shifts to direct traffic, patrol the town and give local police a break.

One woman even drove cross-country from Arizona to hand out Christmas cookies and children's gifts Tuesday, saying her work in Newtown might allow others to spend more time with their own families.

Police, meanwhile, say they still don't know why Adam Lanza killed 26 people at the school, his mother and himself back on December 14th.
