ALBANY, N.Y. -- A weekend concert benefitted the victims in last month's Newtown, Connecticut school shooting.

The Rock for Recovery fundraiser featured live music from local bands at Valentine's in Albany. A silent auction and ticket raffle were also held, with all proceeds going to two Newtown charities.

Organizers set a goal of collecting $5,000. The say they were more than half way there after Friday, which drew more than 200 paid guests.

As a former teacher who lost a family member to violence, organizer Greg Bell says he felt inclined to help out. He says he and the other organizers chose the charities they did for a reason.

"One of the charities we're donating to is the Family and Child Services of Newtown, Connecticut where we figure there's going to be an ongoing need for counseling services in that town and we wanted to do something that won't be a quick fix for the present, but we'll raise some money that'll go for the next few months or so you know," Bell said.

Rock for Recovery is also donating to the "EverRibbon: My Sandy Hook Family Fund."
