Man arrested after pit bull attacks police officer

KINGSTON, N.Y. -- A town of Olive man was arrested after police say he ordered his pit bull to attack an officer. It happened Sunday when a Kingston Police Officer spotted David Smith, 32.

Smith was wanted for an outstanding warrant. When police approached him, they say he let his dog loose. The pit bull then bit the officer, who called for help.

Officers tried to Taser the dog, but were forced to shoot it. Smith was also Tasered in the incident.

He's awaiting arraignment on a number of charges including assault and resisting arrest. His pit bull survived and was treated a local animal shelter.

The officer who was bitten by the dog was treated for injuries to his hand.
