HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. -- Senator Charles Schumer is calling on the federal government to release hundreds of millions of dollars that could help bring broadband to rural parts of the Hudson Valley.
Schumer says $485 million in unused funds would help bring high speed internet to homes and businesses in Orange and Sullivan counties.
Schumer also wants the FCC to back off some of its current standards and unlock the money, despite the FCC setting a rule that the money would not be dispersed unless a company can provide broadband for less than $775 per household. The money would go to telecommunication businesses to help lay down fiber connections for connections.
Schumer says the lack of broadband internet is keeping small businesses from expanding to potential.
