CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- With the cold temperatures, it's important to keep your pets safe.

Frostbite can set in faster for animals when they are outside, damaging their paw pads, noses, ears and eyes. So remember to limit their exposure to cold, stay outside only as long as you need to and leave your pet inside when you can.

Veterinarians say frostbite can have serious complications.

"Unfortunately, many of the most severe cases of frostbite require amputation. The tissue is so damaged that there is not a whole lot we can do to restore circulation and save the digit," said veterinarian Elise Craft.

And don't forget to wipe your pet's paws. City streets and sidewalks are often coated in salt and sand that can be irritating.
