PLATTEKILL, N.Y. -- A Plattekill man is arrested after police said he faked his own kidnapping to extort ransom from his girlfriend.
Police say it happened on January 14th when Mark Rodriguez, 31, left for work in his girlfriend's car.
They say the woman later received a telephone call from a stranger saying her boyfriend had been kidnapped and she needed to hand over two thousand dollars or he would be killed. She called police, who found Rodriguez and an accomplice inside the girlfriend's car in the city of Newburgh.
Rodriguez is now charged with attempted grand larceny.
