KINGSTON, N.Y. -- Kingston Mayor Shayne Gallo held a press conference to discuss the arrest of former Kingston Fire Chief Richard Salzmann.

Salzmann was arrested and accused of knowingly filing a document with false information pertaining to his time and attendance. According to State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, Salzmann received more than $5,500 in pay that he wasn't entitled to.

The investigation prompted changes to the department's time and attendance policies.

"Now, the responsibility of the mayor's office to sign off on and approve time and attendance, overtime and compensatory time that's been requested. Here to fore, up until this point, that was not the case," said Mayor Gallo.

The mayor says that in the past, there were no reviews or verification of payouts of time and attendance by prior administrations.
