BUCHANAN, N.Y. -- A new study finds that if the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant's license is renewed that it could hurt populations of two fish.

The study, completed by NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, found that if the nuclear plant's license is renewed for another 20 years, it could kill off a number of fish within two protected species but would not completely wipe those species out.

The study, sent to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission at the end of last month, found the species that would be affected the most would be the shortnose sturgeon and the Atlantic sturgeon.

It found just under 1,000 fish would be killed from being caught on water intake screens from the Hudson River through the year 2033.

Entergy, the company that owns Indian Point, released a statement about the study, saying, "We are pleased that the report recognizes Indian Point Operation, during the next 20 years, is not likely to jeopardize sturgeon fish populations, and particularly pleased to see the resurgence of the once over fished shortnose sturgeon that occurred during Indian Point's operation. We look forward to working with all responsible agencies toward appropriate monitoring and protections for sturgeon during a renewed license period."
