Fatal crash on I-84
TOWN OF NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Town of Newburgh police are investigating a fatal crash that shut down I-84 for several hours on Wednesday morning.
Police said Arben Smajlaj, 33, of Mahopac was driving west on 84 in a Dodge Neon when the vehicle either stopped or slowed to a near stop and was hit from behind by a Ford Escape.
Smajlaj was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Escape, Ronald Malitz, 49, of Newburgh, was taken to St. Luke's where he was treated for minor injuries.
The crash happened around 4 a.m., leading to I-84 being shut down for several hours. It has since reopened.
