COLONIE, N.Y. -- One man is dead after a crash on Central Avenue early Saturday morning.

Colonie police said the crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, when a United States Postal Service tractor trailer hit William Jennings, 28 of Schenectady.

As soon as the 48-year-old driver realized he hit someone, he got out of the truck to check on the victim. That's when police said the driver was attacked by at least one person. Police said they are now in the middle of investigating the fatal accident and the assault.

“Immediately after the truck driver hit the pedestrian, he got out of the truck and then very shortly after that he was assaulted by an unknown person right in the middle of the street. We were receiving numerous 911 calls for both the accident and the assault,” said Lt. Ken Pero, Colonie Police Department.

Jennings was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was sent to Albany Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Police are looking for more information on the assault of the driver.
