NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. - This is where it started, according to police. They say a former substitute teacher at the Sacred Heart School in the City of Newburgh became friendly with one of her students. Police say 44-year-old Lisa Franklin of Wallkill ultimately ended up having a sexual relationship with the boy - then only 12 years old. It lasted for about a year until police said the boy's parents found inappropriate text messages on their son's cell phone.
"Not something you'd see between a 13-year-old child and a 44-year-old woman, that's for sure," said New Windsor Deputy Police Chief Rick Hovey.
Franklin now faces charges which include multiple counts of rape. Police said not only was she the boy's teacher, she was also his at-home tudor.
"Spent social time with the child. And the parents trusted that she was acting as an adult and doing the proper thing," said Hovey.
The Archdiocese of New York released this statement:
"The safety and well-being of our students is always our primary concern, and the Archdiocese of New York and Sacred Heart School leadership are cooperating fully with local authorities on this case. Mrs. Lisa Franklin has not been employed by Sacred Heart School as a substitute teacher since the spring of 2012. Because this is an ongoing police investigation, we are not able to provide any further comment."
Now according to police, the suspect in this case is married and has two teenage children of her own.
Police said Franklin is likely to face additional charges because the alleged sexual encounters took place in multiple jurisdictions.
"Sexual intercourse, oral sex, this would occur in a car, maybe in a parking lot at various different areas when she was spending time with this person," said Hovey.
Franklin was arraigned Thursday and is due back in court at a later date.
